Resident Evil Remastered

Resident Evil Remastered

Resident Evil Remastered is getting a remake for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this month upon its release on January 20th, 2015. Resident Evil is one of those survival horror video games that used to terrorize children and adults alike back then when it was released on March 30th, 1996 for the original PlayStation video gaming console. The first ever version and it would be a good time to roll back on what Resident Evil Remastered was, and where it actually came from.

Resident Evil Remastered – Origins

Resident Evil Remastered was released by Capcom on the 22nd of March, 1996, its original platform being the Sony PlayStation. Eventually, it would have quite a few other platforms, including the Gameboy Color, the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64, PC and every other major platform today. It was followed up with five sequels, the latest, Resident Evil 6, releasing in October 2012.

Resident Evil Remastered – Gameplay

Resident Evil Remastered and all its successors are third-person shooters, which means that the playable character is visible to the user, unlike first-person shooter where the user plays in the eyes of the character. This automatically makes Resident Evil Remastered a bit more difficult to use than games like Battlefield and Far Cry. However, if one has experience with games like Grand Theft Auto or perhaps even other third-person combats games like Batman: Arkham City or Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, then it shouldn’t be too difficult. The graphics were respectable at the time, and were improved in the seventh-generation PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Resident Evil Remastered – Characters

There were five main playable characters in the original Resident Evil game:

Chris Redfield: An American Special Ops unit, also one of the eleven founders of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) with his partner Jill Valentine.

Jill Valentine: Half-French-half-Japanese, Jill is a Special Ops Agent, and a founder of the BSAA.

Leon S Kennedy: Leon is an American agent for the Division of Security Operations (DSO). After one successful day as a police officer, he was recruited by the US-STRATCOM.

Claire Redfield: Claire is Chris’s younger sister, and a member of a human rights organisation called TerraSave.

Albert Wesker: Albert has an aim for power, for himself. He is forever linked with The Umbrella Corporation, and also goes undercover as a Raccoon City Police Department (RPD) officer and the alleged leader of S.T.A.R.S., both in order to participate in illegal activities. Eventually, after betraying all his allies, he hides by faking his own death and receives supernatural powers from a Prototype Virus. He proposes to allow this power to everyone, and rule over them as a supposed ‘god’. Quite an antagonist for the series, eh?

Resident Evil Remastered – Creatures

This is a rather strange section, but this game deserves it. Here’s a small collection of some of the creatures:

Zombie: These human corpses are created by injecting the t-virus into people, which makes them blood-thirsty, decomposed, slow, creepy bodies, which are dubbed zombies for their slow pace. One bit would infect you with the virus, and you’ll become one too.

Hunter (Alpha): The Hunter a was created by Umbrella through a method of injecting lizard DNA into a human, and bonding the t-virus into it. The result was a giant reptile that could walk on two legs.

Nemesis-T Type: Also known as “the Pursuer”, Nemesis-T Type was named after the Greek Goddess of eternal payback. It was created by Umbrella Intelligence , with an aim to prove that people infected with the t-virus can still remain with a good mind and can follow orders.

William Birkin: Birkin was a Chief Executive at Umbrella, and he was responsible for the discovery of the G-virus, which he injected in himself, turning him into a monster. This virus also intoxicated rats, which was largely responsible for the Raccoon City Destruction Incident.

Chainsaw Man: These are quite literally men that carry around chainsaws (female equivalent: Chainsaw Sisters). They wear a used potato sack on their head to protect their identity. Due to the Plaga parasite, he is generally very violent and will ‘mercilessly chase his enemies around with his chainsaw. There is also a superior version of Chainsaw Man, known creatively as “Giant Chainsaw Man”.

Resident Evil Remastered – Plot

The Resident Evil Remastered game begins with mysterious disappearing people in Raccoon City, by which it means they are being eaten. Nobody knows how or why. S.T.A.R.S. sends out its Bravo (2nd) Team to investigate, and they are apparently all taken out. This forces S.T.A.R.S. to send out its primary team, Alpha, which comprised of Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon S Kennedy, Claire Redfield and the undercover Albert Wesker. Their quest eventually leads them to a haunted, large mansion, where the horrifying drama begins, and all the secrets reveal themselves.

Resident Evil Remastered – Resident Evil 5

The fifth edition in the Resident Evil series was released on the 5th of March, 2009, almost thirteen years after the release of the first one. Zombies had been replaced by humanoid things called “Manaji”. These have the ability to move fast, react, use weapons and also speak, all of which zombies cannot do. This made the main ‘small’ enemies quite a challenge. The player could play as either Chris Redfield or Sheva Alomar, a new character. The main player could have been played by two people playing as either character in an online co-op mode. This was also possible locally in a split-screen interface. In this game, Chris is sent to investigate a bio-organic weapon threat in a desert area in Africa. The area would serve as the main setting throughout the game. Albert Wesker also returns as one of the antagonists in the game, which would prove to be his last. It is remembered for its co-op story an smoother game play.

Resident Evil Remastered – Resident Evil 6

Sixteen years into the iconic franchise, Resident Evil 6 was the next direct sequel in the series, released in October 2012. The game features four stories told in different perspectives of the main protagonists: Chris Redfield; Leon S Kennedy; Ada Wong, a freelance agent; and Jake Muller, who is supposedly the son of Albert Wesker. In terms of game play, this game features several improvements, including movement and the physics involved with objects. Resident Evil 6 is a more diverse story than any other game it had previously followed up. This allowed for more character development, and it was critically acclaimed for its boosts in thrill and surprise.

Resident Evil Remastered will always remain one of the more successful horror game franchises, and with its remake of the original one coming up for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, one can guarantee that it is only the beginning.
